Yes, I’m well aware the world is ending. At least that’s the case according to the professional media feed on the TV at the gym. The gym I finally got to after a detour down the coast highway this morning. With the window down. And a stop at the Oceanside Pier to watch this for a while.

Cuz ya know, the world stops and ends when it falls below the horizon visible from a network anchor’s chair.

Sunday started nicely with some good surf in Encinitas, and a good breakfast burrito in a little dive on the coast highway.   It was  brought down a bit by the realization that Spinnner’s wedding ring was apparantly lost in the ocean during the session.  We then consoled ourselves over the loss with a relaxing drive home through the back county on Via de la Valle and the Del Dios Highway, admiring all the bright colors on the side of the road.  Just wanted to reach out the window and grab a handful.

Plants in north county are looking pretty dry after days of 100+ degree heat, bringing back lots of memories of Firestorm 07, but those cyclists looked plenty hydrated, and so pretty in the varying hues of lycra.   Mmmm, nap time until we meet some friends for pizza this afternoon.

I’ve lamented here in the past about the UC’s drive toward mediocrity, particularly as shown by the axing of the Santa Cruz water polo program. Though I still think the UC can and should do better in protecting the system’s reputation and standing in all programs, I read an interesting article yesterday that included some discussion of Yale’s water polo program, and other sports, after they lost official recognition and became club programs. Glad to see that relegation to club status isn’t always the death knell of an athletic program, but can lead to positive outcomes.

Two related notes for the aquatics inclined: Penn State swimmers raised $235 in a charity auction by agreeing to deliver pizza in their speedos, and this year’s Maverick’s Big Wave contest may be canceled due to a lack of sponsors. Hmmm. Pondering. Hmmm.

Tried to get some saltwater therapy in Del Mar while waiting for a bout of writer’s block to go away this morning. The therapy itself was initially very successful, but a seam on my new wetsuit ripped out as I was unzipping the suit after the session. So much for the calming effects of surf – now we’re into the mental-bouncy effects of waiting for warranty repair or exchange. And the writer’s block is still there.

Ready to put this miserable excuse for a week behind me and take a little weekend roadtrip. Time to test out the new wetsuit somewhere between here and Ventura. Disgusted with myself that I’ve had it for a week now and it hasn’t even been near the water. There’s been something seriously wrong with my priorities.

The day goes so much better when you start off with Cocoa Krispies and good surf.  Just sayin’.

Mood swing is coming back to equilibrium.  Plans are to go surfing in the morning.  That should make everything much better.
