Save Us Samuel El, You’re Our Only Hope
Looks like its about time for a big, kick-ass Jedi to step in and knock some heads.
Moving On
Win or draw next Tuesday (no loss because I still get to spend the rest of my life with the man I love), we’re planning a short roadtrip for the following weekend. A couple of days with Diego running in the sand and Chuck field testing the new wetsuit should do wonders for morale. This has been one of those elections where you learn who your real friends are, and who just nods and smiles. I’ll be glad to put it behind me. That also means I’m near the end of my run with KPBS too. Been fun, and a learning experience writing for a much broader audience, but I’m ready to put some of that time and energy back into Howling Point and Beachlaw. There’s a dog here that needs to be idolized.
Looking Forward
I should be writing, but instead I just keep pushing the refresh button trying to find out where FedEx is hiding my new wetsuit. My schedule is packed between now and Tuesday, mostly with election stuff, but come Wednesday I want to be comfy and warm and not at my desk.
Negative Voting
Finally finished marking my ballot this afternoon. There was very little to vote for, and most races boiled down to rejecting the completely unacceptable and acknowledging the palatable. I only voted for two out of eleven initiatives and disgust with a certain political party that seeks my vote while disparaging my family formed the basis for a lot of my other selections. I know there are good Republicans out there, but this year more than most I had a lot of trouble getting past the label. OK, it wasn’t just trouble, more like an insurmountable wall. Why can’t the Libertarians run more sane candidates?
Random Pieces Of Consciousness
Saturday’s just being kinda bleh. Even the zoo was completely boring except for a car fire in the parking lot. Spinner’s off being judgmental, and Diego’s finally tired with the puppy toys and is pushing my water polo ball around the room like the big dog he thinks he is. Maybe I should get him one of the hats for Halloween. He’s got the attitude to pull it off. Got some site maintenance to do, and some Netflix to watch, but having trouble getting motivated enough to get off the couch to do either. Wireless: a curse and a godsend.
Another Reason for Marriage Equality
I thought I was finally through with the wedding posts, but then found this in a comment elsewhere. In response to Leahpeah’s post on our wedding and reception, and her beautiful photo, Ozma wrote
I’m truly digging those shirts. Many have spoken out on the fact that gays and lesbians shall ensure that weddings simply become more and more fabulous and if nothing else, we need to agitate ’til the cows come home to make sure this happens in every state.
Lovin’ it, and thank you.
Still Attached
I’ve been doing more yoga lately, both to stretch out various tight spots and do help detach from the annoying Business of Law issues that seem to be coming with the new economy. When I do it at home, with guidance from the dulcet voice on the DVD, Diego normally just sleeps right through it. Today was different. He seemed to be challenging me on every posture. Trying to outstretch me on downward-facing dog. Testing my balance on tree pose by curling up on the one grounded foot. Then, while laying down in the final relaxation pose he starts licking my face, then does his quick little check to see if maybe, finally, he’s loosened my nose to the point where it will come off. A quick snap back to reality and thirty minutes of zen abruptly ends with a nip from the big dog wannabe. Such is life.
Another Successful Weekend
I wasted most of my Sunday coding on the sites, and now I’m just vegging on the couch watching Futurama while Spinner makes some pancit for dinner. Life is good.
Despite the slacking, there was a good swim and steam yesterday, and the coding means that comments are back on the photo gallery. This will be an ugly Business of Law week, but at least I’m going into it well rested, and fairly content.
Thank You Teachers!
Los Angeles Times reports that the California Teacher’s Association is giving one million dollars to the fight against Proposition 8.
“For us, it’s a civil rights issue,” said the association’s President David Sanchez. “We don’t believe people should be treated differently.”
The teachers union also takes issue with advertisements by backers of Proposition 8 suggesting that the measure would stop children from being taught about gay marriage in schools. Union leaders echoed complaints by the No on 8 campaign that the ads are misleading because California law already prohibits teaching any child health issues without parental consent.
That’s the same point as was made in an editorial against the measure in yesterday’s San Diego Union-Tribune.
The reality though is that elementary kids are going to learn about marriage at school. Most of them will learn about it early on, when they find out that every family is not like their own, and they’ll learn about it in the schoolyard like every other important issue. Some families have a mommy and a daddy, some only have one or the other, and some have two of each and none of the other.
Little Trevor’s daddies will host a birthday party, or little Michelle’s mommies will sit next to each other at the school play, and some god-fearing couple with four failed marriages between them will get apoplectic and embarrass their child in front of his friends. Which is the family with problems in this picture?
The sad part is that some adults want the different kids to be ashamed about their parents, and to have fewer legal rights if both their parents are of the same gender. How on earth can that be in the children’s best interests? Why should the California Constitution be amended to help them in that?
From cameras that use chemically coated plastic film
Spinner was kind enough last night to accompany me to the local camera store. He was a good husband, kept an eye on my plastic, and pulled me back to the car at just the point I started drooling over the shineys.
We did however, accomplish our mission there, which was to pick up some film (yes film) from our reception earlier this month. In addition to the beautiful work of our professional photographer, we also seeded the tables with those little disposable cameras to see what our guests would do.
Needless to say, our guests were a hoot, and we certainly appreciate their contributions to the memories of the day.
Also wanted to thank Leahpeah for a kind post and great photo of the day.
