The sad part is that Fannie and Freddie were never meant to hold large portfolios of anything. They were just supposed to buy the mortgages, package them and sell them, no different than any other wholesaler.
And why that activity, or any deviation from it, should ever have been deemed a proper function of government (and, plunging shares notwithstanding, FNM and FRE are most definitely “the government”) remains unanswered.
Wow…that certainly is a big undertaking especially with tax dollars. So we are bailing out Fan and Fred now? Can they take on my credit card bills?
