Big Brotherish But Well-Intentioned
This is my site and my server, so I do see things, like someone looking for information on prostate cancer diagnosis in young men and staying here reading the related posts for a couple of hours this morning. Don’t know who or where you are, but always willing to chat, and there are plenty of ways to contact me through the sites.
Rambling Through The Heat Stroke
Too hot and too close to a long weekend to get anything significant done with law practice stuff. Tweaking the site banner code a bit. May be including some new banners in the rotation later today, but not at the moment. Holiday banners are staying out of the rotation for a while too, despite an unfortunate sighting of the traditional Star Trek ornaments at Hallmark the other day. Sweating like a pig with temps of 94 degrees at 9:40 in the morning drinking iced coffee does not put me in the Christmas spirit. Bah Humbug me if you want, but no snowmen will be displayed here until at least October. A line must be drawn somewhere.
If you have need of seeing our Christmas banners, try the banner archive. It’s slightly cleaner than our physical storage unit, and about as organized.
Psyched for water polo watching this weekend, though not as psyched as I was. A tournament that had twelve teams two years ago and fourteen teams last year has dwindled to eight and among the missing are my favorite Anteaters and Banana Slugs. Since Cal doesn’t come down this far south, I cheer for the UC of my choice at this, and with five UCs represented in past years it was easy to always be vested. Sometimes even conflicted. Now, gasp, there will actually be a gap of two and a half hours on Sunday morning with no UC team playing, although I suspect the Pomona – Air Force match up will still be worth watching. My pick: Sagehens over the Falcons. Just gotta remember to adjust the camera filter for the pasty white skin tone of the Fighting Falcons.
Medical Problems Limping In The Family
Taking it easy today because my leg feels like it got all twisted, even though I don’t remember doing anything to it. Noticed it a bit yesterday, went to the air-conditioned gym anyways, and now I really notice it. Doubt I’ll get much sympathy from family though – Mom goes home today with a shiny new knee, installed factory fresh just last week. Not only will she get the sympathy, her painkillers are probably better than mine too.
Hear The Locals Speak
Richard is brilliant helping the New York Times report on Bush’s visit to New Orleans.
Chuck (the one at The Gumbo Pages) discusses the current state of life in New Orleans two years after Katrina.
Marketing Week
It’s Marketing Week here. That’s what it’s called when the clock is ticking on other people’s responses to things and I should be out shaking hands and wining and dining the contacts. Doing more freelance writing to keep the name out there. ’Giving back’ at the alumni events. But the weather is too nice. Maybe I could get some temporary tattoos with logos for hartley-law and beachlaw like the pro beach volleyball players seem to be wearing, so I can be marketing while I’m swimming or reading on the beach. This lap is sponsored by Beachlaw Dot Info, your California Beach Law Resource. No permanant tattoos though. Eight years into being a lawyer I’m still not that sure this is what I want to do when I grow up.
Better Than Coffee
While I was loving watching the passing storm yesterday morning, eventually wind pushed the rain onto the deck and forced me back inside. Sat there in the La-Z-Boy watching the storm and reading the Times and staying dry as two inches of rain were dumped on my little strawberry plant.
Of course I was soaking wet at the pool two hours later, but that’s a different kind of wet. Especially when I get the pool to myself because so many other people are afraid to leave their houses. Slick roads and flashing red signals and water-damaged hair styling and all that. Nearly had the whole gym to myself. It was a very nice wet.
In hindsight though, the Times was a little boring yesterday. Nice crossword and good writing, but nothing like today’s headlines. Gonzales leaving?! Why, thank you Mister Editor. You know how to make a reader’s morning.
One-half second away
The computer is safely unplugged, but I’m outside with the coffee and the Times watching Mother Nature’s show. Awesome display.

Three Seconds Away
Sunday mornings are supposed to be about relaxing and sleeping in, not rolling thunder.
Genetic Annihilation
Scientists, who must know what they’re talking about because they’re “scientists”, say that redheads will be extinct within 100 years. [via IFTL]. I see on the internet that the story may have already been debunked, and can’t find the National Geographic article the australian piece refers to online, but just the thought of events like Jimbo’s Leprechaun Insurgency Photo Challenge becoming a relic of a bygone genome sends a chill down my spine.
Found Things
Interesting Business of Law™ post found while bouncing through some of the legal blogs this afternoon. Interesting to see the thoughts spelled out from a client perspective. Not sure I agree with all of it, but it’s provoking some good thoughts. Can’t remember the last link in the chain to give credit where it’s due, but I started at Bag and Baggage.
While Denise’s site has been linked from here for like, forever, there have been a few changes to the links in the last couple of weeks. Aquablather seems to have closed his site, and Mojofat has disappeared as well. I’m also noticing that the list isn’t reflecting what I’m reading as much as it used to, so expect some changes down the road.
