Things just happen sometimes
After seeing this I expect it will be even harder to get people out for next year’s Penguin Plunge. I could understand dying of hypothermia from the cold of a plunge, or drowning in the surf as the limbs become numb and unable to move, but hitting your head on a sandbar? That’s bad mojo.

This, unfortunately, happens a few times every summer at NYC beaches — it’s not Polar Bear thing. The currents are very changeable and new sandbars are always forming. Inexperienced swimmers don’t realize that and dive right into them.
The same things happen around here year ’round too. Just ironic for that to be his cause of death on that particular swim.
