How Many Dead Messengers?

As long as Americans are being killed daily in Iraq, it probably makes little difference who is defending the policy each afternoon from the White House briefing room. And as long as gas prices are approaching $3 a gallon, it makes little difference whether Rove is spending more time on policy or politics.

Maybe, just maybe, the problem is the message and not the messenger.  RIP Scotty McClellan.

And while we’re here, I’ll also quibble on that “approaching $3″ line.  Three dollar gas is here and here to stay.

And truthfully, it should have been here about a decade ok.

$3 is cheap for Europe and most of the world.

Apples and oranges, and totally outside the market place. The differences are tax rates and overhead costs that must be absorbed into the price. Taxes on gasoline here in California are 51.9 cents per gallon, but in the UK (per Wikipedia) taxes alone after converting currency and units are $3.13 per gallon.

At those rates, even if the retailers paid the same amount in labor and utilities to run the gas station, and the gasoline was purchased on the market at the same price including transportation charges, and the retailer took the same amount per gallon as profit, gasoline prices should still be $2.61 per gallon cheaper here.

And you haven’t even got me started on the higher payroll taxes in Europe increasing overhead costs and the trickling down of the social program costs, blah, blah, blah.
