Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman unveiled the “Easy Ways to Save Energy” campaign Monday, an effort that includes a 32-page booklet of tips and a mascot, the fearsome Energy Hog the government hopes will become as familiar as Smokey Bear or McGruff the Crime Dog.

“I am confident,” Bodman told reporters, “we can be successful in minimizing the impact of rising energy costs this winter.”

The Energy Hog? I think some of the missing gas has been seeping into the air supply at the White House? Bottom line: my income is static or declining, and every dollar I pay for gas (for the truck, the furnace, the water heater, whatever) over the dollars I paid last year for the same gas means I’m not spending those dollars somewhere else. Giving those dollars to SDG&E or Chevron means they aren’t there to give to DVD and book publishers or nacho makers. Who will I blame? Sock puppet Bush Master controllers Rove and Cheney. So why not some action to fix the problem (suspend costly regulations? suspend taxes on gas?) rather than a PR campaign to help idiots think Bush isn’t the problem.

   Oh, lets not forget that our tax dollars supported the creation of the Energy Hog whilst Dubya visited New Orleans for what? The eighth time?

   My Saturn’s 12 gallon gas tank could have been filled how many times with the fuel used by Air Force One, Marine One, and Dubya’s motorcade on yet another “nonessential trip” photo op?
