Dashed dreams
Made a quick business trip out to El Centro this morning. El Centro is about 120 miles east of San Diego – closer to Arizona than to the the beach and 100 degrees in the shade at 9:30 a.m.
If the name can be taken literally, it’s remarkably accurate. The place is absolutely in the middle of nowhere.

Thought I saw my El Dorado, but it turned out to be just a mirage. I wonder how many people come to California expecting the city of gold but finding only crappy neon signs and remnants of past glory.

Oh, and yes, the Kontiki is open and in business for those making travel plans. Not sure if they had vacancies though – the neon NO was lit up on the other side of the sign, but not this side.
There was an old motel here up until just a few months ago when they finally razed it called the el dorado. It was known for being a one night stand hook up shack.
Wow. I wonder if they planned it that way, making fun of their patrons’ quests for love with the ultimate symbol of futile searches.
