Presidential Politics Quiz
Which candidate for President of the United States said the following (or at least signed his name to the press release)?
Politicians don’t get to decide whose baby can get baptized, who can receive Holy Communion or who can get bar mitzvahed — and they shouldn’t get to decide who gets married, either.
To those who guessed Bush or Kerry, WRONG. Gotta remember there are more than two choices, even in a democracy like ours. This little bit of support for the First Amendment comes to you from Michael Badnarik, Libertarian candidate for the Presidency.
Another gem:
“The only reason that marriage licenses even exist is that state and local governments once mandated them as a way to enforce laws against interracial marriage,” he said. “In other times and places, marriage licenses were denied to interracial or other politically incorrect couples, just as they can be denied to gay couples today.”
Don’t know if that’s correct, but it sounds good, and reminds people of the Libertarian party’s whacko fringe roots. A candidate has to acknowledge the core constituency. Thinking about it a bit, I suspect he failed to give due credit the fact that “licensed” marriages protected estates from claims by bastard children, but it’s all inter-related, so to speak. Gotta make certain only the right people have money and power.
Given my disgust with both Bush and Kerry, I suspect this will be the first of many shout-outs to the third-party and independent candidates between now and November 2.
