Charity and the Big Legal Monopoly
Well, I paid my dues today to the state legal monopoly. I may legally practice my profession for another year. They need money so they can hire people to tell me when to pay my dues and how many hours of continuing ed classes I need to take. They also need money to send me both a monthly newsletter and a monthly magazine. Once they’d locked in those things, they kindly asked me to voluntarily send more money for things they want, like giving scholarships to law students preserving California’s judicial and legal history. I politely declined all their requests.
I pay taxes. I give to my charities. No one should be using their monopoly status to make me give to their charities.
