The Business Of Law
Friday has been spent pretty much exclusively involved in the business of law. I’m not a big fan of the business of law.
I prefer to practice safe sex rather than market safe sex.
I prefer to practice my golf stroke than discuss the golf industry.
I prefer to practice law, not deal with the business of law.
But today was spent at the beautiful campus of the Point Loma Nazarene University here in San Diego participating in the San Diego County Small Business Tax Information Day. As usual when I visit college campuses, the sight of the undergrads made me feel old and out of shape. I would have preferred to stay and watch the soccer practice than end the break and go to the next scheduled seminar. Or just keep standing there with my complimentary coffee and muffin and keep watching the fishing boats offshore.
But I was good. I put on my sole proprietor/small businessman hat and listened to reps from the IRS, EDD, SBDITC et al teach me how to improve the business side of the house and not incur the wrath of the taxing powers. And since I’m a firm believer in the old adage that the power to tax is the power to destroy, I show great respect and deference to those who could destroy me. Overall, it was a good session and worth the time – just not my first choice of ways to pass a Friday.
Oh, and there was schwag. Not dot com quality schwag, but I’ve got post-its and pens for the next six months.
