Separation of Church and State? In Utah?
I’ve spent some time visiting Utah and known some people who spent a lot more time there than I did. That’s why this surprises me so much. Court Rules Against Mormon Church In Sidewalk Suit. [via Held in Contempt] The 10th Circuit says that Salt Lake City must actually protect free speech rights on sidewalks near the LDS downtown compound. What a shocker.

Isn’t this the same sort of right to association/speech that was granted to protestors in company towns in the early 1900′s (mining/labor protests) or at the labor protests at supermarkets in the 1970′s? One of the big problems with the Church of Latter Day Saint’s case was that, other than the Church-owned sidewalk, there was allegedly little nearby space for protestors to express their views.
I have a “no soliting” sign on my front door, but for some reason, Mormon missionaries think that they are not included under the soliciting category. That makes absolutely no sense to me,because they are salesmen. The Church requires members to pay 10% of their earnings to the Church every month or they are not worthy to enter the Temple, the Church then makes profit and expands, therefore, missionaries are salesman because members are paying to be on membership list. That’s just like signing up for a membership at a gym and paying a monthly fee.
