Following up on Ernie the Attorney’s post about legal publishing of case law is a wall that I’ve butting my head against for the last few days, the legal publishing of local law. To complete a project and be able to make certain statements with some level of accuracy, I want to review the various county codes of California. The problem: there are fifty-eight counties and and so far I’ve only found less than half of them publishing their codes online. At an absolute minimum the public has a right to be able to find out what the statutory law says they’re supposed to be doing (or not doing). While a two- or three-week road trip to visit the local libraries of the missing counties might have some advantages, I don’t think it is something I should have to do. Something is just wrong with this picture.
