The architecture and physical location
The architecture and physical location of some older buildings has the effect of blocking cell phones and beepers. From personal experience the Monterey branch of the Monterey County Superior Court seems to be one such building. Reception was so bad I wondered why they needed all the signs reminding people to silence their electronic leashes crutches devices. Maybe some other cell company actually had good reception there, but I never saw anyone successfully make a call in that building. While I like my little phone, I’m one of the first to admit there’s a time and a place when their use is absolutely rude uncallled for inappropriate. I know I’m not alone in that feeling. Now, technology to beat back the technology. Localized cell phone jamming. I love the idea. The work part of me (coincidentally the part that uses the phone the most) says there are all kinds of legal problems with this solution. Intentional interference with the contract between the cell phone abuser and his dealer is the first that comes to my caffeine deprived mind. Liability if the jammer interfered with emergency personnel communications could also be an issue. But oh, if the legal problems could be worked out, what a dream it could be. Not only peace and quiet at those places where peace and quiet are expected, but a really good excuse. I’m sorry I didn’t answer the page. I was at chez lui for lunch and that’s an enforced cell-free area.
