There’s been a lot of reporting lately about how CNN is losing ratings ground to Fox News and MSNBC. No great complaints here. I was never a big fan and kinda thought their international reporting was a little biased. MSNBC seems to do better on business news and Fox News, like the rest of that network, takes that in-your-face sex-and-violence tabloid approach that just sucks you in, even though you’ll never admit it.
But ignoring the analysis, and trying to avoid commenting on why Americans watch what they watch, could it just be that CNN does a lousy job of reporting NEWS. An example from just ten minutes ago: I’m here, surfing the channels and looking for some reason to set down the remote. MSNBC is reporting on the latest Jerusalem suicide bombing. Fox News is also reporting on the latest Jerusalem suicide bombing. CNN’s Jeannie Moss is bravely reporting on gay penguins in some public zoo [and I can't even find a link to the story on their website]. I’ve got nothing against gay penguins. I’m sure Penguin Pride is the social event of that zoo, and absolutely believe the Human Rights Campaign should expand their advocacy to include the rights of all creatures to do whatever with whomever they want. The point is that maybe, just maybe, if CNN wants to be known as a news network, they should focus on that aspect of their broadcasting.
Personally, forget them all. I’m holding out for my cable company to offer the Naked News in the basic package.
